CHAPTER FOURTEEN

We come up the tunnel in the dark, and I see light ahead. Our campsite. The guard we’ve captured is currently dragged along by Ms. MacNamary and Kenzie, who looks ready to rip him to shreds if he tries anything funny. He clearly notices that, because he stays very still and behaves himself.

Kenzie and Ms. MacNamary heave him off to one side once we’re in the camp area. The other two guards could be anywhere.

“We need scouts,” Ms. MacNamary says.

Eddie and Raquel both volunteer. Before anyone can object, they dash off into the cave, looking around our camp. I wonder if they offered to go search because they still don’t trust Ms. MacNamary and are checking around for signs of betrayal. After several minutes, they return.

“They’re by the main cave entrance,” Raquel says. I blink. I hadn’t even noticed her climb up the stairs to check. “How do we want to handle them?”

“Blasting powder,” I say.

Kenzie grins a feral grin. “Okay, scary, but yes!”

“No,” I say quickly. “I don’t want to use it. I want to intimidate them with it.”

Ms. MacNamary beams. “Excellent plan, Bri!”

Todd and Wyatt exchange wary glances, but I don’t know what to tell them. Desperate times, desperate measures.

We enter the camp and Ms. MacNamary takes us to a shed where the blasting powder is stored. I pick up a bag of it, grim resignation coming over me. This stuff is dangerous. If I make a mistake, or get too close to a flame, it could kill me. But after all we’ve already been through, I’m surprisingly calm about that fact.

Todd and Wyatt have secured the first guard in one cabin. Raquel says they practically used all the rope in the camp, and Todd pouts at that.

“Hey, I’m not going to apologize for being cautious,” Todd says. “You want him to get free and warn Dr. Grier?”

“It was my idea to double tie everything,” Wyatt says. “You can laugh at me if you want.”

But Raquel doesn’t. Todd and Wyatt stay behind with Ms. MacNamary so they can sort out exactly how we’re going to get the cement into the tunnel, while the rest of us head through camp in the other direction toward the cave entrance. The element of surprise is a major part of our plan, so when we reach the spiral staircase, we ascend it one at a time again, carefully and quietly.

I get to the top and notice it’s starting to get dark outside. It’s hard to tell where the cave ends and the outdoors begins. But two men move by the entrance, and my eyes adjust.

Once we’ve all reached the top, I give Kenzie a nod.

“Hey, dipwads!” she shouts.

They spin.

Kenzie ignites her blowtorch, and I raise my bag of blasting powder up into the air.

“If you make any moves, we blow all of us up, right here, right now.”

One of them freezes, and the other frowns, not buying it. “You wouldn’t do that,” he says. “You’d kill yourselves.”

Raquel, who had been hiding in the shadows behind us, comes up with her own blowtorch.
